Hostels in four different countries, night buses, trails with no signal, street-food meals — backpackers travel differently, expose themselves differently, and need different insurance. A cheap generic policy will probably fail at the most critical moment.

Why Backpackers Need Specialized Insurance

1. A Flexible Itinerary

Backpackers change plans. Fixed-destination insurance can leave you unprotected if you cross into an unlisted country. You need multi-destination or worldwide coverage.

2. Risk Activities

Many basic policies exclude these activities. You need to check explicitly.

3. Long Duration

Trips of 30, 60, 90 days or more. Many policies cap at 30 or 60 days — check the limit and whether extension is possible.

4. Baggage and Electronics

The Motorbike Trap in Asia

In countries like Thailand, Bali, Vietnam and Cambodia, renting a scooter is almost a backpacker rite of passage. It is also the number 1 cause of hospitalization among tourists.

Watch out: - Many policies exclude motorbike accidents if you do not hold a motorcycle license - Some exclude bikes above a certain displacement (50cc, 125cc) - No helmet = coverage exclusion in many cases - Check your policy before you rent

Asteroid Assistance covers motorcycles up to 125cc with a valid motorcycle license and a helmet.

A Real Scenario

Lucas, 24, from Curitiba, had a scooter accident in Koh Samui, Thailand — no helmet, late at night, alcohol in his blood. The insurer refused coverage on all three policy exclusions. Knee surgery + 4 days of hospitalization: USD 8,200 — paid by his father via emergency international transfer.

With Asteroid: the accident would have been covered had Lucas been wearing a helmet and holding a valid license.

FAQ

1. Does travel insurance cover trips longer than 60 days?

It depends on the policy. Asteroid Assistance covers up to 90 days. For longer trips, check extension options or take an annual policy.

2. Is my laptop stolen at the hostel covered?

It depends on the baggage coverage and the electronics sublimits. Check the specific electronics limit — many policies carry a low sublimit (USD 500-800 for electronics).

3. Do I need to declare every country I will visit?

For multi-destination or worldwide coverage, no. For destination-specific policies, yes — and itinerary changes can create coverage gaps.

4. Is credit-card insurance enough for a backpacker?

Usually not. Card insurance carries very limited coverage, a 30-60 day maximum, and insufficient protection for sports and evacuation. See our full comparison.

5. What if I lose my passport abroad?

Call your insurance assistance line immediately. Asteroid Assistance covers administrative and emergency expenses related to lost documents.
